ASCT1 does not transport glutamate or aspartate but alanine, serine, cysteine, and threonine instead. ASCT1 transporter functions primarily as an amino acid exchanger. Transport is associated with a chloride channel activity that is thermodynamically uncoupled from amino acid transport.
