The E antigen is also known as HBeAg or precore antigen.
It is one of two HBV core proteins and is secreted into the serum of infected patients, usually early on in the infection.
Positive testing for HBeAg usually indicates active replication of HBV and is associated with in increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma.
HBeAg also elicits T cell tolerance and regulates the immune response to the intracellular nucleocapsid of the virus.
This HBeAg-mediated immune regulation may predispose to chronicity during perinatal infections and prevent severe liver injury during adult infections.
