Alkaline phosphatase (AP) is a ubiquitously expressed enzyme which removes phosphate groups from target molecules, including DNA, RNA and alkaloids, under alkaline conditions, and is present at higher concentrations in the placenta (placental AP), intestines (intestinal AP) and liver/bone/kidney (tissue non-specific AP).
Although the exact biochemical function of BAP is uncertain, measurement of the serum levels of BAP can be used as a biochemical indicator of bone turnover.
Conditions which present with a decrease in the level of BAP (hypophosphatasemia) include the inherited bone-deforming disorder hypophosphatasia and osteoporosis, while an increase in BAP (hyperphosphatasemia) is associated with Paget’s disease, bone fractures and osteosarcomas.
