• Viral Transport Media (VTM) is an isotonic solution composed of protective proteins, antibiotics to prevention microbial contamination, and buffers to assist in maintaining physiological pH range. Isotonicity is not essential. VTM is primarily utilized for the transportation of swabs or materials released into the medium from a collection swab. Viral Transport Media (VTM) from Universal BioProducts has been produced in strict accordance with the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) guidelines (CDC SOP# DSR-052-02). This VTM was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to support ongoing research and development needs.

As per the CDC's recommended formulation, our product contains heat inactivated (HI) USDA origin fetal bovine serum (FBS), gentamicin, amphotericin in a Hanks balanced salt solution base. This product is suitable for a wide range of viral research and development purposes including viral collection, transport, maintenance, and culture. VTM is a clear liquid with an amber tint and contains no phenol red indicator as this is not a requirement per CDC guidelines. Each lot of VTM is tested on blood agar incubated at 37°C for 48 hrs to determine sterility of the final product and the results of this microbial sterility test must be negative for microbial growth (no growth) in order to pass our QC.
