Toxoplasma is a crescent shaped sporozoan that lives as intracellular parasite in various tissues of vertebrates and completes its life cycle in a single host. It is transmitted via raw/undercooked meat, contaminated soil, or by direct contact. Infection due to Toxoplasma gondii usually occurs in pregnant women where a variable degree of immunosuppression may exist or in patients receiving immunosuppressive drug therapy following organ transplant. Traditionally, Toxoplasma infects tissue of the GI tract where an active infection is accompanied by fever and enlargement of the spleen. Symptoms of toxoplasmosis are generally mild but severe infection of lymph nodes may occur. Congenital toxoplasmosis, in which the maternal infection is transmitted during pregnancy, can produce blindness or mental retardation in the newborn.

Note:This antigen preparation should be sonicated immediately prior to use to ensure that the preparation is uniform. Purified whole tachyzoite preparation is ideal for IgG detection and many IgM assays. All toxoplasma membrane proteins are present in high concentrations.
Inactivation:Inactivation effectiveness determined when no detection of growth is seen after 7 days when cultured in Vero cells under optimal conditions. Result: No growth detected.
Storage and Stability:Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing and store at -70°C. Aliquots are stable for 6 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
