- Sodium Barbital is the sodium salt of Barbital (B118500) which is a prototype of the barbiturate hypnotics. Sodium Barbital was used in the past as a sleeping aid and solution of sodium barbital is used as a pH buffer. It was shown to have an inhibitory effect on brain and serum xanthine oxidase.
