• Protamine Sulfate is a small cationic protein that binds and precipitates DNA. It may be used for the removal of DNA from protein samples or the purification of DNA binding proteins. Protamine Sulfate has antibacterial properties. Protamine sulfate is a highly cationic peptide binding to heparin. It binds to and precipitates DNA, and can be used to remove DNA from protein samples. Protamine are proteins rich in cysteine and arginine. It possesses many phosphorylation sites. It is found to be localized to the sperm head. Can be used as an alternate to polybrene in retroviral-mediated gene transfer. Cell labeling with protamine sulfate complexed to ferumoxides has been used.
