Amphetamine or amfetamine is a psychostimulant drug of the phenethylamine class which produces increased wakefulness and focus in association with decreased fatigue and appetite. Amphetamine exerts its behavioral effects by modulating several key neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Amphetamine has been found to have several endogenous analogues, l-Phenylalanine and Beta-Phenethylamine are two examples.
