Cytochrome c oxidase assembly factor 4 homolog, mitochondrial, also known as COA4, is the last enzyme of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, is a very complicated process and requires the assistance of a large number of accessory factors. It is essential for oxidative phosphorylation and comprises multiple complexes, including cytochrome c oxidase, assembled in macromolecular supercomplexes. Defects in COX4 assembly alter cellular respiration and produce severe human encephalomyopathies.
