Serum albumin is synthesized in the liver as preproalbumin (propeptide 615aa, mature protein 597aa). It is secreted into the serum. It is the major serum protein and constitutes ~50% of the total serum proteins. It binds copper, nickel, calcium (weakly, at 2-3 sites), and protoporphyrin, long-chain fatty acids, prostaglandins, steroid hormones (weak bonds with these hormones promote their transfer across the membranes), thyroxine, and triiodothyronine.
