Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase isozyme L1 (UCH-L1), a thiol protease belonging to the peptidase C12 family, is involved in the processing of ubiquitin precursors and of ubiquitinated proteins. UCH-L1 recognizes and hydrolyzes peptide bonds at the C-terminal glycine of ubiquitin. UCH-L1 is expressed in neurons and cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system and thier tumors. Defects in UCH-L1 are the cause of Parkinson disease type 5.
