Neuropeptide found in high concentrations in the gut. When released from afferent nerves, causes a neurogenic inflammatory response, including mast cell degranulation. Induces Ca2+ mobilization. Reported to activate Go alpha, Gq/11 alpha, and Gs alpha subunits in CHO cells via activation of substance P receptors. Also reported to induce superoxide production in neutrophils.
