Human Tumor necrosis factor (TNF- alpha), also known as Cachectin, is a cytokine composed of 157 aa residues, having a molecular weight of 17kD (monomer). There is 79% homology between human and murine TNF- alpha, including conserved cysteine residues which form an intrachain disulfide bridge. Biological effects of this cytokine include antitumor activity in vivo and in vitro, activation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, antiviral activity, and the induction of the release if Interleukin-1 or colony stimulating factors from a variety of sources.

Biological Activity:The cell cytolytic activity is determined in the L929 cells (3 x 104 cells/assay) and it is 2-4 x 108 U/mg.
Storage and Stability:Lyophilized powder may be stored at -20°C. Reconstitute to with sterile dH2O or buffer, aliquot and store at -20°C. Reconstituted product is stable for 6 months at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
