Collagen is an inert, rigid protein found predominantly in skin, ligaments, bones and teeth. Its most distinctive attribute, essential to a transmitter of mechanical force, is inelasticity. Its fundamental structural unit is tropo-collagen, a molecular rod about 2600Å in length and 15Å in diameter and 300,000 molecular weight. In tendons these macromolecules, grouped as collagen fibrils, run parallel to the axis. In skin the fibrils are interlaced and branched.
Applications:Suitable for use as a standard for collagen analysis by SDS gel; as a substrate for MMP-1, MMP-8 and MMP-13; and as an antigen for immunizing animals for the induction of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in certain species and strains of experimental animals.
Recommended Dilutions:Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher.
Solubility:Colorless solution at 2mg/ml in 0.05M acetic acid. Soluble in acidic buffer (maximum 4mg/ml), but difficult to dissolve in neutral buffer. In order to dissolve this product in neutral buffer, first dissolve in 0.01 or 0.05M acetic acid, and then add into neutral buffer containing 0.2M sodium chloride or dialyze against the same buffer.
Storage and Stability:Lyophilized and reconstituted products are stable for 12 months after receipt at -20°C. Reconstitute with sterile acidic buffer.. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Light sensitive. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.

Note: Type II collagen does not form a stable gel with incubation at 37°C. To prepare a type II collagen gel, addition components such as Type I collagen or other substances may be required.
Note: To avoid fibril formation under neutral conditions, keep solution on ice.
