The protein encoded by this gene is a Golgi type II transmembrane glycosyltransferase.
The encoded protein catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid to cell surface proteins to modulate cell-cell interactions.
Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
