Mcl-1 is an anti-apoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family of proteins.
It has a pro-survival role in the early stages of apoptosis, and is thought to prevent cytochrome c release from mitochondria.
Mcl-1 is also essential for embryogenesis and for the development and maintenance of B and T lymphocytes.
Mcl-1 is a highly regulated protein induced by a wide range of survival signals, including cytokines and growth factors.
During apoptosis, Mcl-1 is rapidly degraded by the proteasome pathway, and is also readily cleaved by caspases to produce a potent cell death promoting protein.
