Brain-enriched hyaluronan-binding protein (Brevican) is a 160kD member of the aggregan/versican proteoglycan family of matrix proteins.
It is brain-derived and serves as a linker between HA and other matrix molecules such as tenascins and fibulins.
Mature human Brevican is 889 amino acids in length.
It contains multiple domains, with an N-terminal V-type Ig-like domain (aa 52-139) and a C-terminal EGF-like (aa 646-682) and C-type lectin domain (aa 695-802).
Additional isoforms exist resulting from an alternate start site at Met228 and a 23 aa substitution for aa 649-911 that serves as a GPI-anchor motif.
Over aa 23-911, human Brevican shares 82% aa identity with mouse Brevican.
