TLRs play an important role in the recognition of invading microbial pathogens during innate immunity, acting through adaptor molecules such as MyD88 and TRAF6.
TLR6 acts via a cytokine signaling pathway to induce the activation of NF-kappaB, through the formation of dimers with TLR2 (CD282) which coordinate macrophage activation by Gram-positive bacteria and zymosan.
Studies have also revealed the involvement of TLR6/TLR2 dimers in apoptotic responses, through recognition of mycoplasmal lipoproteins.
