Ras homologue enriched in brain (Rheb) is a 17kD G-protein and evolutionarily conserved Ras family member, widely expressed in tissues other than the brain.
Compared with many small GTPases, Rheb is unique since it exists in a highly activated state in mammalian cells.
Rheb also plays an important part in regulating the TOR signally pathway.
Although Rheb is expressed at relatively high levels in the adult cortex, it can be rapidly induced in brain neurons by synaptic activity.
Following a seizure, it is transiently induced in the hippocampus.
