CD84 encodes a 328aa protein that is shortened to 307aa after cleavage of the signal peptide.
The protein has 4 potential N-linked and 29 potential O-linked glycosylation sites.
The observed molecular mass on SDS-PAGE is 64 to 82kD, which endoglycosidase treatment reduces to 46kD and 36kD products, close to the calculated mass of approximately 35kD.
In addition to a 25aa transmembrane region and an 83aa cytoplasmic region, CD84 has a 189aa extracellular segment composed of 2 Ig-like domains similar to that found in other members of the CD2 family.
Northern blot analysis revealed mRNA expression of a 4.4-kb transcript at high levels in lymphoid tissue and at lower levels in lung; no expression was found in liver.
