Gamma-glutamyltransferase-like activity 1 (GGTLA1) is a member of a gene family that encodes gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase enzymes.
This enzyme consists of a heavy and a light chain, and is able to hydrolyze the gamma-glutamyl moiety of glutathione.
It converts leukotriene C4 to leukotriene D4, however, it doesn't convert synthetic substrates that are commonly used to assay gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase
GGT5 belongs to the gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) gene family.
GGT is a membrane-bound extracellular enzyme that cleaves gamma-glutamyl peptide bonds in glutathione and other peptides and transfers the gamma-glutamyl moiety to acceptors.
GGT is also key to glutathione homeostasis because it provides substrates for glutathione synthesis.
