Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan 5 is a protein encoded by the CSPG5 gene.Yasuda et al.
(1998) cloned CSPG5 from a human brain cDNA library, using a rat cDNA homolog as probe.
The deduced 539aa protein has a multidomain structure consisting of an N-terminal signal sequence, a chondroitin sulfate-attachment domain, an acidic aa cluster, an EGF-like domain, a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic tail.
The human and rat proteins share 86% homology.
Northern blot analysis detected restricted expression of a 2.4-kb transcript in brain.
A faint 5.2-kb band was detected in heart.
Neuroglycan C (NGC) is a transmembrane chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan expressed predominantly in the brain that possesses an EGF-like extracellular domain.
