MTF-2 (metal response element binding transcription factor 2), also known as PCL2 (polycomb-like protein 2) or metal-response element DNA-binding protein M96, is a 593aa nuclear protein that binds the metal-regulating element (MRE) of the gene promoter for Metallothionein 1A.
Containing two PHD-type zinc fingers, MTF-2 exists as three alternatively spliced isoforms and is encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 1p22.1.
Human chromosome 1 spans 260 million base pairs, contains over 3000 genes, comprises nearly 8% of the human genome and houses a large number of disease associated genes, including those that are involved in familial adenomatous polyposis, Stickler syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, Gaucher disease, schizophrenia and Usher syndrome.
