Hematopoietically-expressed homeobox protein HHEX is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HHEX gene.
Homeobox genes are members of a family of transcription factors that regulate tissue development in many different organisms.
Hromas et al.
(1993) set out to identify homeobox genes that might play a role in hematopoiesis.
And using somatic cell hybrid analysis, they mapped the HHEX gene to chromosome 10, where the HOX11 gene is located.
Homeobox genes are involved in neoplastic transformation of both epithelial and hemopoietic tissues.
The divergent homeobox gene HEX is expressed in the anterior visceral endoderm during early mouse development and in some adult tissues of endodermal origin, including liver and thyroid.
D'Elia et al.’s findings suggested that regulation of HEX entry in the nucleus of thyrocytes may represent a critical step during human thyroid tumorigenesis.
