c-MET (HGFr) is a proto-oncogene (locus 7q21-q31) protein and a cell-surface receptor of hepatocyte growth factor.
It has tyrosine kinase activity.
It consists of alpha (50kD) and beta(145kD) subunits linked by a disulfide bond.
c-Met is overexpressed in many cancers.
The MET gene is often amplified between tumorgenesis and metastasis.
It has been suggested that c-Met is useful as a prognostic marker in numerous cancers including: breast cancer, gastric carcinoma, endometrial carcinoma and others.
