The junctional adhesion molecule-1 (JAM-1) is an integral membrane protein that colocalizes with tight junction molecules occludin, ZO-1, and cingulin.1 JAM-1 has been characterized as a member of the immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily and is composed of an extracellular domain, a single-pass transmembrane region, and a short cytoplasmic tail.2 JAM-1 is localized at tight junctions in endothelial and epithelial cells and its sub-cellular distribution is modulated by inflammatory cytokines.2 JAM-1 is also expressed on circulating leukocytes and platelets as well as in lymphoid.2 Most claudins as well as JAM-1 end with the amino acid Val at their C-terminal ends, suggesting that these COOH termini directly bind to PDZ domains.3 JAM-1 appears to be a single copy gene, which is constitutively expressed on various tissues and cells, and may be involved in cell-to-cell adhesion through homophilic interaction.4 JAM-1 was detected in human intestine cell lines T84, CaCO2 and HT29, in the lung cell line A 549, and the liver cell line HepG2.5
