Of the 11 families of phosphodiesterase (PDEs) identified, PDE4, PDE7, and PDE8 are specific for cAMP.
However, isoforms of the PDE4 family often account for most of the cAMP-hydrolyzing activity of a cell.
Four genes (PDE4A, B, C and D) make up the PDE4 family.
One or more subtype variants of PDE4B are ubiquitously present in all mammalian cells.
In the CNS, PDE4B subtype variants are expressed in varying ratios.
Peripheral tissues exhibit differential expression of PDE4B1, B2 and B4 variants.
