Parathyroid hormone related peptide (PTHrP), is a ubiquitously produced neuroendocrine polypeptide hormone, which signals through Parathyroid Hormone Receptor 1 (PTHR1), and acts as a critical regulator of cellular and tissue development, cell differentiation and migration, calcium and phosphorous extracellular concentrations, bone, teeth, and mammary gland development, and epithelial calcium ion transport.
Studies have shown the involvement of PTHrP during the metastasis of colon cancer cells, identifying a positive correlation between PTHrP, Rac1 activity, the guanine nucleotide exchange factor Tiam1, and integrin alpha6beta4.
Elevated expression of PTHrP is most commonly associated with breast cancer, and also with gastrointestinal (GI) tumors.
