PAI-1 (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1), otherwise known as SERPINE1 is a 45kD serine protease inhibitor and member of the serpin family, which acts as the primary inhibitor of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), and hence fibrinolysis.
Increased levels of PAI-1 are associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and an increased occurrence of thrombosis in obesity, and can be induced by obesity related factors including insulin, glucose and VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein).
