Wnt-1, formerly known as int-1, is a 343 amino acid non-glycosylated secreted protein associated with the extracellular matrix, involved in normal embryonic development and particularly linked with breast cancer.
Wnt-1, which signals through binding to the Frizzled family of transmembrane receptors, was originally identified as a proto-oncogene implicated in carcinomas induced by the mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV).
Wnt-1 belongs to a family of Wnt genes involved in the dorso-ventricular development of the mesoderm during embryogenesis, with a restricted temporal and spatial pattern of expression.
