Apolipoprotein C-III (ApoC-III) has been shown to be an essential part of the metabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins.
ApoC-III is thought to exist in three different isoforms (ApoC-III0, ApoC-III1, and ApoC-III2) based on the sialylation degree.
The primary CIII1 and CIII2 isoforms, contribute to hypertriglyceridemia and that apoC-III2 may be important in the expression of the small, dense LDL phenotype.
Regulating apoC-III metabolism could be a promising new therapeutic approach to managing dyslipidaemia and cardiovascular disease risk in the metabolic syndrome.
ApoC-III has been found to be over-expressed in patients with uremia.
