Calreticulin was originally identified as a Ca2+ binding protein in the muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum.
Since its original discovery, it has been found in high abundance in non-muscle tissue.
Calreticulin has the ability to bind Ca2+ with high capacity but low affinity.
The exact function of calreticulin is not yet known, however recent reports suggest that it may play a role in nuclear hormone receptor gene transcription and may also act as a chaperone protein.
Calreticulin is 90% conserved among human, mouse, rat, rabbit and Aplysia.
