Phosphodiesterase 5A, a cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase, has been implicated in primary pulmonary hypertension, cardiac failure and erectile dysfunction.
PDE5A also may function in the regulation of coronary blood flow.
PDE5A is the predominant enzyme responsible for cGMP hydrolysis in trabecular smooth muscle.
PDE5A activitity is inhibited by sildenafil (Viagra) and zaprinast.
At least three alternatively spliced transcripts have been reported.
