CD23, a 45kD Type II transmembrane glycoprotein, is a member of C-type Lectin family.
It is a human leukocyte differentiation antigen expressed in numerous hematopoietic lineage cells and consists of an extracellular lectin domain, alpha-helical coiled-coil stalk region, a transmembrane region and a cytoplasmic region.
It exists as 2 isoforms; CD23a is constitutively expressed in B-cells and expression of CD23b is induced by IL-4.
CD23 binds to CD21 antigen, CD11b, CD11c and also functions as a low-affinity receptor for human IgE (FcER2).
Role of CD23 include B-cell activation, differentiation, IgE synthesis, cell adhesion, regulating monocyte activation, antigen presentation and in the differentiation of early thymocytes.
Soluble fragment of CD23 promotes survival of germinal B-cell and increases histamine release from basophils.
