CDK7, a CDC2/CDK type protein kinase, is the catalytic component of the Cdk-activating kinase (CAK) which acts as a regulator of cell cycle progression.
CDK7 complexes with cyclin H and MAT1 to form CAK, and this multi-subunit protein phosphorylates the cyclin-dependent protein kinases CDC2/CDK1, CDK2, CDK4 and CDK6.
CAK also associates with the transcription factor IIH (TFIIH) which functions in transcription initiation and DNA repair.
TFIIH has been shown to be regulated by CDK8/cyclin C.
