Zinc-finger proteinscontain DNA-binding domains and have awide variety of functions, most of which encompasssome form of transcriptional activation or repression.
Themajority ofzinc-finger proteinscontain a Krüppel-type DNA binding domain and a KRAB domain, which isthought to interactwith KAP1, therebyrecruiting histonemodifying proteins.
ZFP36L3 (zincfinger protein 36, C3H type-like 3) is a 725 amino acid membrane protein that isspecifically expressed in placenta and extraembryonictissues.
Containing two C3H1-type zincfingers, ZFP36L3 plays a role in promoting deadenylation and degradation of target mRNAs by binding to the AU-rich element (ARE) in the 3'-UTR.
ZFP36L3 is encoded by a gene located onmouse chromosome X A5.
