The genes encoding type I interferons(IFNs),which include 14 IFN-alpha genes (two of which are IFN-alpha1 and IFN-alpha13), one IFN-beta gene, one IFN-ω (also known asIFN-alphaII1) gene and a number of IFN-ωpseudogenes, are clustered on human chromosome 9.
IFN-alphaand -beta are cytokinesthat arewidelyknown to induce potent antiviral activity.
They exert a variety of other biological effects, including antitumor and immunomodulatory activities, and are increasingly used clinicallyto treat a range of malignancies, myelodysplasias and autoimmune diseases.
IFN-ω is antigenically different from human IFN-alpha, IFN-betaorIFN-y, butis a component of naturalmixtures ofIFNspecies produced byvirus-induced leukocytes or Burkitt’slymphoma cells.
The type I interferon receptor (IFN-alphaR) interactswith IFN-alpha, IFN-beta and IFN-ω, and seemsto be a multi-subunit receptor.
