• beta-defensins(also designated BD, and HBD in human) are smallcationic peptideswith broad-spectrumantimicrobial activity.
• beta-defensins are involved in the resistance of epithelialsurfaces,such as airwaysurface fluid, tomicrobialcolonization.
• Produced inmucosal epithelia and neutrophils of severalspecies, beta-defensins are developmentallyregulated.
• Human beta-defensin 1, isolated fromthe kidney, has amolecularmass of 3.9 kDa.
• Human beta-defensin 1 shares homologywith other beta-defensinsfromhumanblood filtrate and is also present in nanomolarconcentrationsin humanplasma.
• In addition to the antimicrobial activity of human airway epithelia, beta-defensin 1may play a role in themucosal defenses of the lung.
