Human CD305, otherwise known as LAIR-1 (leukocyte-associated Ig-like receptor-1), a transmembrane protein, expressed by natural killer cells, monocytes, dendritic cells, and T cells, and also by other hematopoeitic cells including B cells, but is not expressed by platelets or erythrocytes.
Although structurally related to other killer cell inhibitory receptors, CD305 does not appear to recognize HLA class I, providing a novel mechanism of HLA class I-independent NK cell regulation.
CD305 has been shown to inhibit proliferation, cellular activation and inflammation, and to induce apoptosis in myeloid leukemia cell lines, and found to be expressed at abnormally low levels in naive B cells from HIV-1 infected patients.
