Somatostatin negatively regulates the growth of various normal and tumor cells via five somatostatin receptors.
Somatostatin receptors are expressed by a large variety of human tumors, and the predominant expression of SST2 receptors in tumor tissues forms the basis for the successful application of SST2-preferring agonists in the treatment of patients with GH-secreting pituitary adenomas, as well as in patients with carcinoid or islet cell tumors.
The SST2 receptor exists as two splice variants that differ in length and composition of their intracellular carboxy termini.
SST2 is the only member of the somatostatin receptor family that contains introns.
