TBC1D1 plays a role in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation.
It also regulates insulin mediated GLUT4 translocation through its GAP activity and is a likely Akt substrate.
Specific mutations in the TBC1D1 gene have been reported in certain forms of severe human obesity.
