LAMA2 encodes the alpha 2 subunit of laminin 2, and among other tissues is prominently expressed in striated muscle.
Laminin is composed of three subunits (alpha, beta, and gamma), and refers to a family of basement membrane proteins.
Laminins that contain the alpha 2 subunit are as a group referred to as merosin.
Mutations in LAMA2 were identified as the cause of congenital merosin-deficient muscular dystrophy.
