LOXL2 is a member of the lysyl oxidase gene family.
This family of extracellular, copper dependent enzymes participates in the post-translational modification essential to the biogenesis of connective tissue by deaminating the side chains of lysine residues in collagen and elastin.
This results in the covalent cross-linking of fibrillar collagen and the formation of desmosine and isodesmosine cross-links in elastin.
Members of the lysyl oxidase family play a role in tumor suppression, cell adhesion and senescence.
