The Alpha 2a- Adrenergic Receptor functions as a post-synaptic receptor that mediates the effects of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
This adrenoceptor also functions as a presynaptic autoreceptor, inhibiting the subsequent release of neurotransmitter, especially epinephrine, from sympathetic nerves and from adrenergic neurons in the central nervous system.
Adrenergic Alpha-2A Receptor polymorphisms have been identified in individuals with Tourette's syndrome.
Furthermore, increased levels of plasma norepinephrine have been noted in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and learning disabilities.
Mutant mice lacking both Alpha 2a and Alpha 2c Receptors exhibited increased plasma noradrenaline and developed cardiac hypertrophy by four months of age.
