The ING1 (inhibitor of growth) tumor suppressor protein shares a number of biological functions that are very similar with p53.
The human ING1 gene contains three exons and two introns.
There are four alternative splice variants produced from three different promoter regions (p33 ING1, p24 ING1, p27 ING1, p47 ING1).
A number of studies have concluded that ING1 can influence a number of biological functions, which might be dependent on the variant that is expressed.
The ING1 family has been reported to mediate growth arrest, senescence, anchorage-dependent growth and apoptosis, as well as influence chemosensitivity.
