Members of MS4A protein family are characterized by the presence of 4 highly conserved transmembrane domains.
CD20, a 35-37kD Human B-cell specific tetraspan membrane protein, is a unique member of this family.
CD20 plays a major role in the initiation of intracellular signaling and regulating B-cell growth and differentiation.
It complexes with BCR and regulates Calcium ion entry, thereby regulating B-cell signaling and activation.
Antibodies such as Rituximab directed against CD20 are being extensively used for the treatment of B-cell lymphomas.
