Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a cytokine produced primarily by stimulated monocytes, fibroblasts, and epithelial cells.
It has a wide variety of biological functions including activating cell surface signaling assemblies composed of IL6, IL6RA, and the shared signaling receptor gp130.
The cytokine plays an essential role in the final differentiation of b-cells into Ig secreting cells and induces myeloma, plasmacytoma growth, and nerve cell differentiation.
In addition, IL-6 is an important regulator of acute phase reactions.
Ota et al.
(2001) presented evidence that variations in IL-6 may be related to osteoporosis.
