The human myoglobin gene is 10.4kb long and has a three exon/two intron structure with long non-coding regions.
It encodes the protein myoglobin, which is a haemoprotein contributing to intracellular oxygen storage and transcellular facilitated diffusion of oxygen.
Myoglobin is a member of the globin superfamily and present in skeletal and cardiac muscle.
