Matriptase, also called MT-SP1, TADG-15 and ST14, is a member of the type II transmembrane serine protease family and is expressed on most human epithelia as an 80-90kD acell surface glycoprotein.
Processing, activation and shedding of the C-terminal 26kD peptidase S1 domain is complex and requires coexpression with its inhibitor, HAI-1.
Matriptase activity is critical to epidermal barrier formation.
It is overexpressed in a variety carcinomas.
Human and mouse matriptase share 86% aa identity within the peptidase S1 domain.
