PTP gamma, a R5 receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase, has been implicated as a potential tumor suppressor gene in kidney, lung, ovary and breast cancers.
PTP gamma maps to a region of human chromosome 3, 3p21, that is frequently deleted in renal cell carcinoma and lung carcinoma.
PTP gamma expression has been shown to be reduced in breast and lung cancer cell lines and the expression in breast cancer is regulated by 17 beta-estradiol (E2) and Zeranol.
Four protein isoforms of PTP gamma have been documented in rats.
